Competitive Soccer FAQs

What is Competitive Soccer?

Competitive soccer is for players who are ready for a higher level of commitment and competition.

  • Tryouts required for team placement
  • Higher level of training and skill development
  • More structured practices (usually 2–3 times per week)
  • Travel for games and tournaments
  • Focus on player development, teamwork, and competitive play

Why Join Competitive Soccer?

Competitive soccer is a fun and rewarding experience for players who love the game and want to be challenged. At Ebbetts Pass FC, our Comp program gives players the chance to grow both on and off the field.

Players enjoy Competitive soccer because they:

  • Play at a faster, more exciting level of the game
  • Build strong friendships with teammates
  • Get more touches on the ball and improve skills quickly
  • Experience the excitement of tournaments and game days
  • Learn teamwork, confidence, and resilience
  • Feel proud representing their club

For many players, Comp soccer becomes more than just a sport—it’s where they make memories, challenge themselves, and have a ton of fun doing what they love.

When is the Season?

Fall Season: August – November

Winter Season: December - February

How Much is Competitive Soccer?

Competitive soccer includes additional expenses beyond the standard EPYSL registration due to league requirements and expanded competition. At Ebbetts Pass FC, families can expect additional costs such as:

$100 - $250 Club Fees

  •  Player passes, insurance, uniforms, team gear, and equipment.

$75 - $200Tournament Fees

  •  Teams may participate in tournaments throughout the season, which are not included in base fees.

$0 - $350 Travel Expenses

  •  Depending on the team and schedule, travel may include gas, meals, and occasional hotel stays.

When and Where are the Games?

Fall Season:
Games are typically held on Saturdays, with approximately 50% played at home (Feeney) and 50% played away in locations such as Turlock, Manteca, Oakdale, and Stockton. Occasionally, game days may vary due to scheduling conflicts, but most games take place on Saturdays.

Winter Season:
Winter play is more flexible and may include tournament participation, a weekly league with consistent games, or a combination of both, depending on the team and coach.

What is the Commitment Level?

Competitive soccer requires a higher level of commitment than rec. Players are expected to attend all practices and games, arrive on time, and be fully engaged. Consistency is important, as each player’s attendance impacts the development and success of the entire team. While coaches understand that conflicts can come up, regular absences may affect playing time and team placement.

What is Player Development?

Player development is a key focus of the comp program. Training sessions are designed to improve technical skills, game understanding, and overall confidence on the field. Players will be challenged at a higher level and may be asked to play multiple positions to support both their individual growth and team needs. The goal is to help each player become a more complete and adaptable soccer player.

How much Playing Time?

Playing time in comp is earned rather than guaranteed or equal. Coaches make playing time decisions based on a combination of factors including skill level, effort, attitude, coachability, and consistent attendance at practices and games.

Players who demonstrate strong work ethic, listen and apply coaching feedback, and contribute positively to the team environment will typically see more playing time. Game situations, positions, and team needs may also impact how minutes are distributed.

It’s important for players and families to understand that playing time may vary from game to game, and development and team success are prioritized over equal rotation.

Do we have to Commit if we Try Out?

No! All interested players are encouraged to attend tryouts. There is no commitment to accept a spot if offered.

  • If selected → you can accept or decline and still be added on a rec team
  • If not selected → player is placed on a rec team

How do I Try Out for a Comp team?

To be considered for a comp team, players must register for evaluations (click here) and attend a tryout. Following tryouts, families will receive placement results. If offered a spot, you can accept or decline, and players who are not selected will be placed on a rec team.
